Pathomorphology is an interdisciplinary field of medical science that deals with diagnosing diseases by analysing microscopic and macroscopic changes. The pathologist diagnoses the disease and assesses the severity of the disease.

Predictive factors (determining the response to specific medications) and prognostic factors (predicting the progress of the disease) are verified to manage treatment and evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy.

Samples for microscopic observation are embedded in paraffin or frozen (in the case of intraoperative examination); histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and digital image analysis are also used.

During the pathologic/histopathologic examination, tissue or cell preparations are observed under microscope (smear test, fine-needle aspiration biopsy, fine-needle aspiration biopsy, tissue specimen examination). The examination is conducted during the procedure so no additional special preparation is required from the patient.

The Department has been authorized by the Polish Association of Pathologists to perform histopathological tests and smear tests. It is also accredited by the Ministry of Health for providing specialized training in pathology and is the only unit in the region authorized to train physicians of other specializations.
