TASKS:

In the Radiotherapy Department in Legnica patients are treated utilizing ionizing radiation from external sources (external beam radiotherapy). We treat cancers of the head and neck, lungs, prostate, breast, brain, stomach, rectum, colon, soft tissue sarcoma, lymphoma and other types. In cooperation with surgery and chemotherapy departments we perform combined treatment which significantly improves the outcomes.

In the first step, radiation therapists qualify patients for treatment in the outpatient clinic, and then prepare them for the procedure, plan the radiation therapy and monitor the patient during and after the irradiation. Patients are treated on an outpatient basis.

Treatment is based on the latest technologies and is performed in accordance with current therapy principles. As part of the treatment planning process a CT scan is performed to create individual treatment plans (in accordance with patient anatomy).

Two times a week, oncology radiation therapists, clinical oncologists, surgeons, urologists, haematologists and otolaryngologists meet at INTERDISCIPLINARY STAFF CONFERENECES (as part of the „ONCOLOGICAL PACKAGE”).

We use conformal radiation therapy techniques, IMRT and arc radiation therapy technique (RapidArc). During the treatment, images are taken in order to verify conformance with the treatment plan, and in the case of prostate cancer patients markers are implanted to the prostate gland to improve the quality of irradiation.

The Lower Silesian Oncology Center branch in Legnica is equipped with an integrated therapeutic line consisting of two high-energy linear accelerators, a CT scanner with virtual simulation function and management and verification system directly connected to servers (image server and database server) located in Wrocław (Lower Silesian Oncology).
